Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Story? (2026 Tested Guide)

August 18, 2026 · Matthew Chen

If you've ever wanted to save something from an Instagram Story but hesitated because you wondered whether the other person would know, here's the short answer:

No. In our August 2026 hands-on testing, Instagram did not notify the Story owner when another account took a screenshot of a regular Instagram Story.

We tested this using two separate Instagram accounts on both an iPhone 11 and a Xiaomi 15 Pro.

The Story owner could still see that the second account had viewed the Story. However, Instagram did not display a screenshot icon, send a push notification, add a screenshot warning to the viewer list, or otherwise indicate that a screenshot had been taken.

There is an important exception:

Certain disappearing photos and videos sent through Instagram Direct Messages can use screenshot detection.

So the easiest rule to remember is:

  • Regular Instagram Stories: no screenshot notification observed.
  • Certain disappearing Instagram DMs: screenshot detection can occur.

We Tested Instagram Story Screenshots in August 2026

Rather than relying only on older articles, forum discussions, or social media claims, we tested Instagram's current Story screenshot behavior ourselves.

The test was conducted by Matthew Chen in Hong Kong on August 18, 2026.

Test Devices and Instagram Versions

Device Platform Instagram Version
iPhone 11 iOS 443.0.0.33.78
Xiaomi 15 Pro Android 436.0.0.41.73

Two separate Instagram accounts were used throughout the test.

One account acted as the Story publisher, while the second account acted as the viewer taking the screenshot.

Where applicable, we also checked the publishing account after the screenshot was taken to see whether Instagram generated any visible alert or screenshot indicator.

How We Tested It

Our standard Story screenshot test followed this process:

  1. Account A published a regular Instagram Story.
  2. Account B opened and viewed the Story through the Instagram app.
  3. Account B took a screenshot using the phone's native screenshot function.
  4. We returned to Account A.
  5. We checked the Story viewer list.
  6. We checked Instagram's in-app notifications.
  7. We checked for any screenshot-related message or warning.
  8. We repeated the test on both the iPhone 11 and Xiaomi 15 Pro.

We specifically looked for:

  • a screenshot icon beside Account B's username;
  • a screenshot badge in the Story viewer list;
  • an Instagram push notification;
  • an in-app screenshot alert;
  • a Direct Message warning;
  • or any other indication that the Story had been captured.

What Happened?

We did not observe any screenshot notification for a regular Instagram Story.

The account that published the Story could see that the second account had viewed it.

However, taking the screenshot did not create any additional visible notification.

We observed the same basic result during testing on both devices.

Our Test Result

  • Test date: August 18, 2026
  • Location: Hong Kong
  • Tester: Matthew Chen
  • Accounts used: Two separate Instagram accounts
  • Devices: iPhone 11 and Xiaomi 15 Pro
  • Android Instagram version: 436.0.0.41.73
  • iPhone Instagram version: 443.0.0.33.78
  • Result: No screenshot notification was observed when taking a screenshot of a regular Instagram Story.

Based on this hands-on test, our conclusion as of August 18, 2026 is:

Instagram did not notify the Story owner when another account screenshotted a regular Instagram Story.

The Story owner may still see that your account viewed the Story.

That is separate from knowing whether you took a screenshot.

Important Testing Note

Instagram regularly updates its apps and sometimes tests features with limited groups of users.

Our results document what we observed using these two accounts and devices in Hong Kong on August 18, 2026.

Behavior could potentially vary by:

  • Instagram account;
  • app version;
  • operating system;
  • device;
  • region;
  • limited feature tests;
  • or future Instagram updates.

For that reason, our test should be treated as a record of Instagram's observed behavior under these test conditions rather than a guarantee that every Instagram account worldwide will always behave identically.

Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Story?

For a normal Instagram Story, Instagram does not currently appear to send the Story owner a standard screenshot notification.

This applies to ordinary Stories containing content such as:

  • photos;
  • videos;
  • text;
  • music;
  • polls;
  • question stickers;
  • links;
  • and other normal Story elements.

For example, imagine that someone posts a restaurant recommendation on their Story and you take a screenshot because you want to remember the restaurant later.

The person may see that your account viewed the Story.

But in our test, they were not given an additional indication showing that you took a screenshot.

Why Do People Think Instagram Notifies Story Screenshots?

If Instagram does not currently notify people when someone screenshots a normal Story, why are there so many articles, screenshots, forum posts, and videos claiming that it does?

There is a legitimate historical reason:

Instagram really did test Story screenshot detection in 2018.

This was not simply an internet rumor.

For a limited period, some Instagram users were included in a real test that allowed Story creators to identify accounts that had captured their Stories.

Instagram Tested Story Screenshot Detection in 2018

In February 2018, Instagram began testing a feature with a limited group of users that identified people who took screenshots or screen recordings of Stories.[1][2]

The feature was not enabled for every Instagram account.

During the test, some users who captured a Story received a warning explaining that the next time they took a screenshot or screen recording, the person who posted the Story would be able to see that activity.

On the Story owner's side, Instagram displayed a camera shutter-style icon beside the relevant viewer's username in the Story viewer list.

This distinction is important.

The 2018 test did not simply mean that every screenshot instantly generated a normal push notification.

Instead, a Story creator could identify screenshot activity by checking the Story viewer list.

A simplified example of the 2018 test looked like this:

  1. Account A posted an Instagram Story.
  2. Account B opened the Story.
  3. Account B took a screenshot or screen recording.
  4. Instagram could warn Account B that screenshot activity was visible.
  5. Account A opened the Story viewer list.
  6. A shutter-style screenshot indicator could appear beside Account B's username.

Contemporary reporting documented this feature while it was being tested.

TechCrunch reported the experiment on February 11, 2018, describing Instagram's test and the warning shown to participating users.[1]

The Verge reported the test on February 12, 2018 and described the round shutter-style icon that appeared next to accounts that captured a Story.[2]

Instagram Ended the Story Screenshot Test

The experiment did not become a permanent platform-wide Instagram feature.

By June 2018, reporting confirmed that Instagram had stopped the Story screenshot-notification test.[3]

The screenshot indicator that had previously appeared beside viewers during the experiment was no longer part of the standard Story experience.

That gives us the following timeline:

Period Story Screenshot Behavior
Before the 2018 experiment No standard Story screenshot indicator
February 2018 Instagram begins a limited screenshot-detection test
During the test Some Story owners can see a screenshot indicator beside viewers
June 2018 Instagram ends the Story screenshot experiment
August 2026 No Story screenshot notification observed in our hands-on test

Why the 2018 Test Still Causes Confusion Today

This historical test explains much of the confusion that still exists around Instagram Story screenshots.

If you search online, you may find:

  • screenshots of Instagram's old warning;
  • articles stating that Instagram reveals Story screenshots;
  • forum discussions from people who saw the feature;
  • videos showing the shutter-style icon;
  • old social media posts;
  • or users who remember Instagram warning them about taking screenshots.

Some of this information was accurate when it was originally published.

The issue is that it describes a temporary Instagram experiment from 2018.

It should not automatically be treated as evidence of Instagram's standard Story behavior in 2026.

In other words:

Old screenshots showing Instagram Story screenshot detection are not necessarily fake. They may be showing a real feature Instagram tested in 2018 and later discontinued.

2018 Instagram Test vs. Our 2026 Test

The difference becomes clearer when we compare the documented 2018 experiment with what we observed in August 2026.

Feature 2018 Limited Test August 2026 Test
Story owner can see viewers Yes Yes
Screenshot warning shown to some users Yes Not observed
Screenshot icon beside viewer Yes Not observed
Screenshot activity visible to Story owner During limited test Not observed
Standard feature for every Instagram user No No standard alert observed

In our August 18, 2026 testing on the iPhone 11 and Xiaomi 15 Pro, we did not observe the screenshot indicator described in 2018 reports.

The Story creator could still see that the second account had viewed the Story.

Taking a screenshot did not add another icon, badge, or notification.

Screenshotting a Story Does Not Make Your View Anonymous

A screenshot and a Story view are two separate actions.

If you open someone's Story while logged into your Instagram account:

  1. Instagram can register your account as a viewer.
  2. The Story creator may see your username in the viewer list.
  3. Taking a screenshot does not normally add another screenshot notification.

So if your question is:

Can I screenshot an Instagram Story without the person knowing I took a screenshot?

Based on the behavior observed in our August 2026 test, yes.

But if your question is:

Can I view their Story without them knowing I viewed it?

That is different.

If you watch the Story using your own Instagram account, the owner may still see you in the Story viewer list.

Screenshot Notification vs. Screenshot Prevention

It is also important to distinguish between two different concepts: screenshot notification and screenshot prevention.

They are not the same feature.

Screenshot Notification

The screenshot is allowed, but Instagram informs another user that it was taken.

The 2018 Story experiment was an example of screenshot detection.

Screenshot Prevention

The platform attempts to stop or restrict a screenshot from being captured in the first place.

If Instagram experiments with screenshot-blocking or privacy features in the future, that does not automatically mean Story owners will be shown a list of people who attempted to take screenshots.

For the accounts and devices we tested on August 18, 2026, we did not observe a standard screenshot notification when capturing an ordinary Story.

Does Instagram Notify When You Screen Record a Story?

For a standard Instagram Story, screen recording generally follows the same basic rule as taking a screenshot.

A screenshot captures one frame.

A screen recording can capture an entire Story sequence, including movement and potentially audio.

For ordinary Stories, Instagram does not currently provide a standard viewer list showing which accounts screen-recorded the Story.

The account owner may still know that you viewed the Story.

That does not mean they were notified about the screen recording itself.

Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Close Friends Story?

A regular Close Friends Story does not appear to use a separate screenshot-notification system.

If someone adds you to Close Friends and you screenshot an ordinary Story they share there, Instagram does not normally send the creator a screenshot alert.

However, there is an important privacy consideration.

Close Friends content was deliberately shared with a smaller group of people.

So:

“Instagram doesn't notify them” is not the same as “I automatically have permission to repost it.”

Think carefully before redistributing:

  • personal photographs;
  • private conversations;
  • sensitive information;
  • paid content;
  • or anything clearly intended for a limited audience.

Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Highlight?

Instagram Highlights are Stories that an account has chosen to keep accessible from its profile after the normal Story period.

Taking a screenshot of an ordinary Instagram Highlight does not normally generate a screenshot notification.

As with Stories, this should not be confused with other kinds of Instagram engagement that may still be visible to the account owner.

When Does Instagram Actually Detect Screenshots?

This is where the rules change.

Instagram does use screenshot detection for some types of private, disappearing content.

Meta's current Instagram Help Center states that a sender can see whether certain disappearing photos or videos sent through Instagram chat were viewed and whether Instagram detected that someone took a screenshot.[4]

This is an important reason people sometimes believe Instagram tracks every screenshot.

It doesn't mean screenshot detection is used everywhere.

Instead, different parts of Instagram can behave differently.

Practical Breakdown

Instagram Content Screenshot Notification?
Regular Story No standard alert observed
Close Friends Story No standard alert observed
Story Highlight No standard alert observed
Regular Story screen recording No standard alert observed
Feed post No standard screenshot alert
Reel No standard screenshot alert
Profile page No standard screenshot alert
Regular permanent DM conversation Generally no standard screenshot alert
Certain disappearing photo/video in DM Screenshot detection can occur

The easiest rule to remember is:

Regular Instagram content generally does not produce screenshot alerts. Certain disappearing private content can.

What Happens If You Screenshot a Disappearing Photo in Instagram DMs?

A disappearing photo or video sent privately through Instagram is different from a normal Story.

Meta's official Help Center documentation says that the sender can see if Instagram detects that someone has taken a screenshot of certain disappearing photos or videos sent through chat.[4]

So do not apply the Story rule to every feature inside Instagram.

A regular Story and a disappearing DM photo may both contain temporary visual content, but Instagram can treat them differently.

  • Regular Story: no screenshot notification observed in our test.
  • Certain disappearing DM media: screenshot detection can occur.

Can Someone See If You Screenshot Their Story Through the Viewer List?

For a normal Story today, the viewer list is not a screenshot log.

It primarily tells the creator which Instagram accounts viewed the Story.

Suppose you:

  1. open someone's Story;
  2. watch it;
  3. take a screenshot.

The creator may see your account listed as a viewer.

In our 2026 test, they were not given an additional screenshot label beside the account.

This distinction is especially important because the 2018 experiment did use the viewer list to display screenshot activity.

That historical behavior is one reason old screenshots of Instagram can look very different from what users see today.

Can You See Who Screenshotted Your Instagram Story?

Under Instagram's current standard Story behavior, there is no normal “screenshotted by” list showing everyone who captured your Story.

You can see Story viewers and other available engagement information, but that does not mean Instagram tells you who saved a screenshot.

Be skeptical of third-party apps claiming they can:

  • reveal everyone who screenshotted your Story;
  • show a hidden screenshot list;
  • secretly track Story screenshots;
  • or identify everyone who saved your content.

If Instagram itself is not providing that information for ordinary Stories, a third-party service claiming access to a secret screenshot database deserves scrutiny.

Avoid giving your Instagram password to an unknown service simply because it promises information Instagram does not normally expose.

Does Airplane Mode Hide an Instagram Story Screenshot?

Older Instagram tips often recommend tricks involving:

  • Airplane Mode;
  • cached Stories;
  • disconnecting the phone from the internet;
  • browser tabs;
  • or similar workarounds.

If your only concern is whether a normal Story screenshot generates a notification, these tricks are generally unnecessary under the behavior observed in our test.

More importantly, using Airplane Mode does not automatically make the Story view itself anonymous.

If you opened the Story using your own Instagram account, viewing activity may still be associated with that account.

Screenshotting vs. Anonymous Story Viewing

These two ideas are often mixed together.

Taking a Screenshot

You open a Story through Instagram and capture what is displayed on your screen.

The Story owner is not normally notified about the screenshot.

However, your Instagram account may still appear in the Story viewer list.

Anonymous Story Viewing

You view publicly accessible Story content without using your personal Instagram account as the viewer.

For public accounts, an Instagram Story-viewing service such as StoriesIG may allow users to view publicly accessible content without signing into a personal Instagram account.

This does not mean private accounts can be bypassed.

A legitimate public Story viewer should not be expected to unlock private Instagram content or circumvent Instagram's privacy settings.

Privacy and Copyright Considerations Before Sharing Screenshots

The technical ability to take a screenshot is not the same thing as having permission to redistribute it.

Taking a screenshot for personal reference is different from:

  • reposting someone's photography as your own;
  • publishing private conversations;
  • commercially reusing someone else's creative work;
  • sharing sensitive personal information;
  • impersonating another person;
  • or using captured content to harass someone.

A screenshot does not transfer ownership of the original material.

Before redistributing someone else's Story, consider the context, privacy expectations, copyright, and permission.

How to Protect Your Own Instagram Stories

If you're asking this question from the other side —

Can people screenshot my Instagram Story without me knowing?

—you should assume that anything visible on another person's screen can potentially be copied.

Even if software tries to block screenshots, another person could still photograph a phone screen with a second device.

The more practical approach is controlling who gets access to the content in the first place.

For personal Stories:

  • review who follows you;
  • restrict your audience where appropriate;
  • use Close Friends for more limited sharing;
  • avoid publishing highly sensitive information;
  • and assume temporary content can still be copied.

For creators and brands, consider placing identifying elements directly inside important visual content if unauthorized reuse is a concern.

So, Can You Screenshot an Instagram Story Without Them Knowing?

Based on our hands-on testing on August 18, 2026, Instagram did not notify the Story owner when another account took a screenshot of a normal Story.

We tested this using two separate accounts on:

  • an iPhone 11;
  • a Xiaomi 15 Pro;
  • Instagram Android version 436.0.0.41.73;
  • and Instagram iPhone version 443.0.0.33.78.

The Story owner could see that the second account had viewed the Story.

We did not observe:

  • a screenshot icon;
  • a screenshot badge;
  • an in-app warning;
  • a push notification;
  • or an additional entry in the viewer list.

Instagram did briefly test Story screenshot detection in 2018, which explains many old articles and screenshots claiming that Story owners can see when someone captures their content.

That test was later discontinued.

The important current exception is certain disappearing private content in Instagram chats, where screenshot detection can still occur.

So the short version is:

  • Regular Instagram Stories: no screenshot notification observed.
  • 2018: Instagram temporarily tested Story screenshot detection.
  • Certain disappearing DMs: screenshot detection can still occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a Story in 2026?

In our August 18, 2026 test, no.

We took screenshots of a regular Instagram Story using two separate accounts on an iPhone 11 and Xiaomi 15 Pro.

The Story owner could see the viewer but did not receive a screenshot notification.

Did Instagram ever notify people about Story screenshots?

Instagram tested this functionality with a limited group of users in 2018.

During the test, some Story creators could see a shutter-style screenshot indicator beside viewers who had captured their Stories.

The experiment was discontinued later in 2018.

It was not a permanent platform-wide feature.

Why do old articles say Instagram shows Story screenshots?

Because some of those articles were written during Instagram's real 2018 screenshot-detection experiment.

Their information may have been correct at the time but no longer describes the standard Story behavior we observed in 2026.

Can someone see if I screenshot their Instagram Story?

For a normal Story under the behavior we observed, Instagram does not provide the owner with a standard screenshot list.

They may still see that your account viewed the Story.

Does Instagram notify when you screen record a Story?

For ordinary Stories, we are not aware of a standard notification showing the creator which accounts screen-recorded the Story.

The creator may still see your account as a viewer.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a Close Friends Story?

A regular Close Friends Story does not normally generate a separate screenshot alert.

However, Close Friends content may carry a stronger expectation of privacy, so consider the creator's permission before redistributing it.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a Highlight?

There is no standard screenshot notification for an ordinary Instagram Highlight.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?

It depends on the content.

Regular permanent chat content generally behaves differently from disappearing media.

Meta officially documents screenshot detection for certain disappearing photos and videos sent through Instagram chats.

Does screenshotting a Story make my view anonymous?

No.

If you opened the Story while signed into your Instagram account, the creator may still see your username in the viewer list.

Taking a screenshot does not erase the Story view.

Final Answer

Does Instagram notify someone when you screenshot their Story?

For a normal Instagram Story, we did not observe a screenshot notification in our August 18, 2026 hands-on test.

The test was conducted by Matthew Chen in Hong Kong using two separate Instagram accounts on an iPhone 11 and a Xiaomi 15 Pro.

The publishing account could see that the second account had viewed the Story.

It was not shown that a screenshot had been taken.

Instagram did genuinely test Story screenshot detection with some users in 2018, which is why many old articles and screenshots say otherwise.

That experiment ended and did not become the standard Story behavior.

Certain disappearing Instagram DM content remains an important exception because Meta still documents screenshot detection for those features.

Because Instagram regularly updates and tests features, this article reflects the behavior we observed under our stated test conditions and should be reviewed again after major Instagram privacy or messaging updates.
